Sisters of Battle Rhinos x3

The third Sisters of battle Rhino is here. Some finishing to complete, such as the purity seals and the battle flag but otherwise it is done. On of the things that makes the Sisters of Battle Immolator/Rhino kit appealing is the opportunities it gives to make each model slightly different when finished as can be seen from the 3 rhinos here. Some magnet fun has been incorporated into the third Rhino. The cattle prod front bumper is magnetised on. It can be swapped out for the dozer blade on the first rhino. In addition an mindful of how easy it is to break ariels or poles attached to tanks during transportation the banner pole has been magnetised on as well.

Forgeworld Kreig Commissar

No posts for a while but the workshop has been busy. The Kreig commissar is done. Highlighting black was one of the learning points in painting this mini. A tip from the GW site, from some time ago suggested using a mixture of black and turquoise blue. This has proved effective here. The mini came with a rather weedy looking laspistol which seemed rather too mannered for dealing out immediate justice with extreme prejudice. The hand was converted to hold a sawn off shotgun from the Kreig additional weapons pack from Forgeworld.

This mini will be joining the Steel Legion army that is on pause at present. The over all design of the mini is very similar to the Steel Legion. The Steel minis collected so far represent 2 platoons with 2 squads each. A command HQ Squad which this commissar will join, a mortar squad, a lascannon squad and a missile launcher squad. The minis are all metal, except this one but followers of this blog will know that there have been conversions to give meltagunners, heavy flamers and sniper rifles.

Painting Canopies and Sisters of Battle Progress

Hopefully the change in the tidiness of the paint on the canopy can be seen. When painting the small and intricate patterns on the Sisters of Battle canopies it is difficult to avoid some paint going onto what should be clear glass. The answer is the "wooden" pole in the first image which is a cocktail stick . Use the pointy end to carefully scrape away surplus paint. The wood is soft enough that it does not damage the canopy. Scrape too much, then just touch up again.  The after image also shows where some small bits of paint have been missed. Time to go over it again.

The tank reinforcements progress again. Tracks on to 2 now and the third is close to tracks on also. Here they are again :

Sisters of Battle Immolator Progress and Forgeworld Commissar

Firstly the Commissar. Commissar Krieg will be joining the Steel Legion. In his travels he has acquired a hand cannon in the form of a one handed trench shotgun from the Kreig ForgeWorld weapons sprue. Detailing of the mini and splicing of the hand cannon us still to be done

Next the second Immolator for the Sisters of Battle of the Verdant Deed. Still a lot to do but finally the tracks are on meaning that the hull top and extra armour can be fixed on for the second phase of painting.To highlight raised surfaces and add dirt.

Sisters of Battle Tank Reinforcements Progress and Magnets

A pause while the forgeworld MKIIc Rhino Dozer blade was magnetised for the Immolator. The problem was that this blade from forgeworld has short hull attachment arms. This is fine if the blade is glued to the hull.  But with the second Inmmolator the God Emperor had decided to bless the Sisters with a detachable dozer blade. The short arms even with the strongest neodynium magnets because of narrowness of the attachment arms which could not support a magnet more than 3mm in diameter along with the slope of the glacis plate of the hull gave such poor leverage that could not comfortably overcome the weight of the large blade. Various arrangements of magnets and additional clips under the hull were tried until it become obvious that the only realistic solution was to make an extension to the dozer blade arms flat under the hull to give access to larger magnets and a flat surface.


Progress has been made with all three reinforcements tanks as shown. The Exorcist has not quite yet reached the base colours paint stage as some rivets are to be glued to the additional hull reinforced armour panels. Otherwise some satisfactory progress has been made.

Sisters of Battle Tank Reinforcements Continued

Slow progress here. Time flies, no time for minis or painting. Also an obsession with painting the interior of the Rhino which is the 3rd tank reinforcement planned, consumed what little time there was. Sanding the flashing off the metal components of the Exorcist also took time with little progress to show. In total the Sisters will be getting a 2nd Exorcist, a 2nd Immolator and a 3rd Rhino.

Sisters of Battle Tank Reinforcements

Only one of the 3 tanks on the workbench got some TLC today. The current Sisters of Battle Immolator from Gamesworkshop is supplied as an exorcist plastic kit plus a box of additional metal components. But and it is an important but, there are no instructions supplied. Work out for yourself how these components go together. In addition the fit of the metal components to the plastic is not precise. To get a snug fit or an apparently snug fit requires some green stuff and some adjustment of the Immolator components. It is not a kit for the faint hearted or for those without some modelling tools.

One other problem here is that the GW design is a bit naff. There are 2 extra armoured panels for each side fore and aft yet in the centre of each side there is no reinforced armour, a ballistic nightmare. At the rear a ramp still opens in to a troop carrying compartment yet this lies under the exorcist missile launchers and should rightfully be a magazine for these weapons.

The solution is as shown on the previously blogged Exorcist is a bit of plasticard and some green stuff. To get the added metal panels to fit snugly requires some confidence and surgery on the plastic components, plus a good bit of sanding on the metal components.

To make sanding off of mould lines, flashing from metal parts two things are necessary - these are the excellent GW mini vice and some emery boards. Forget the GW boards, Tesco etc are much cheaper something like 10 for 69p in the value range and they work perfectly well.
